John Phillips is a systems engineer with extensive international telecommunications project and employee relations experience. Retiring from Telstra in 2000 after three years as General Manager, Organisation Development, John’s earlier career included 10 years installing submarine cables in the Pacific and Indian Oceans with the Overseas Telecommunications Commission, and two years advising an international consortium extending the domestic telephone network in Central Java.

As a small businessman, he advised and assisted both his daughters set up very different companies in Newcastle (Too Cool For School) and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands (Zephyr Kite Tours). On retiring in 2000, he joined The Warren Centre for Advanced Engineering where he promotes STEM education as Manager, Education Projects.

In 2016 he commenced a fifth career as an entrepreneur; co-founding a kids’ education start-up in the Hunter Region (SLAM Education) and a sixth as a founding Director of the AustSTEM Foundation promoting the Kookaberry late-primary digital learning platform.
